It wasn’t too long ago that I was invited by a higher rank sensei to participate in a black belt training session where we bounced ideas and reflected on the teachings of our betters and things that we have developed along our martial arts journey.
During this time I am not fluent in the specific style that everyone does so it was more of a teaching session for me. This made me realize how naive it is for one person to think that one style is better than the other. That is far from the truth because there was a story I heard of two Karate-ka practitioners who wanted to see which style is better so the two of them faced off. Both were waiting for the other to make a move but neither one did and the fight ended up in a draw. The reason being is that Karate was never meant to be used as a way to fight people; it was an art that relied on defending one’s self.
We must remember that karate begins with a bow and ends with a bow. This always refers to karate starting with courtesy and ending with courtesy. This aspect of karate or any martial art for that matter is what creates bonds between one another from the multiple past generations to the present and from the present to new upcoming generations of martial artists.
